We are located in Building 2 within the Forney Museum of Transportation complex. We are not currently approved to be open to the public through the museum, but hope to gain that approval soon so we can be an exhibit for all museum patrons to view. With that, if you’d like to see the layout or inquire about joining the group, please fill out the contact form and we will be in touch with you.

N scale has been a fixture within the Denver area since back in the mid 70’s when the first iteration of a club was formed. While there have been a handful of groups with different names and affiliations, the Moffat Modelers came to be around 20 years ago. The original layout was built within the Forney Museum when it was located in the Denver Tramway Building, now the current home of REI. When the Museum moved from there to their current location in the River North neighborhood, the layout was completely re-built by members into it’s current design. Completion of the main loop came in 2004, with updates and upgrades since.
We have been constructing and operating a 20’ x 100’ fixed layout model railroad system in 1:160 (N Scale) which models the former Denver and Rio Grande Western, now Union Pacific railroad line between Downtown Denver and the Moffat Tunnel, aptly named the Moffat Route. The railroad features a steady grade, as is prototypical, from North Yard all the way to the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel. With some artistic compression, many of the marquee features of the line are present including Rocky, Plainview and the tunnel district, Pinecliffe, and Rollinsville/Tolland. Also within the layout are the iconic Denver Union Station and the complex around the area including industries and trolly lines, North Yard with its base for switching and engine facilities, Burnham shops – Rio Grande’s main maintenace facility, and the C&S (now BNSF) Arvada sub which serves local industries and the under construction Coors Branch and Brewery.
We have a variety of members who vary in both skill level and activity within the group. Some dedicated to building the layout and scenery, other more focused on operations and some who just want to run trains. We are always looking for members of any skill level to join the group and enjoy the layout, whatever that means for you. We currently are working on the below projects and would love any help or expertise that can be provided. If you are new to N scale or model railroading, we have a terrific group of members who will gladly teach and answer questions on any part of the process.
If you are interested in joining the club, send in your info via the Contact page and we’ll get in touch and schedule a time to come tour the layout. Membership dues are $10 a month and usually paid in multiple month chunks to our treasurer. These dues help cover costs of the railroad equipment, facilities and upgrades. Much of the equipment on the railroad is owned by members who have loaned it to the layout for use in operations, scenery and yard work.
